“For my job, I am in costume in Times Square handing out flyers for Broadway shows. There’s often creepy men coming up to me cat-calling and grabbing me. Usually I just brush it off and find a new spot to stand in. Today I saw everybody who had been coming from or going to the Women’s March. I saw groups of women with their signs and families out with their children. There was just an awesome feeling in the air that inspired me throughout my shift. On my way back to the office at the end of my shift, some guy grabbed me by the wrist and tried to pull me in to take a video of me on Snapchat. Usually I’d rip my hand away and keep on walking, but today I looked at him in the eye and said to his face, “Do not touch me.” He looked taken aback, and I felt triumphant. It felt good to finally have the confidence to tell him to his face that it is not okay to touch me without my permission. These marches are important to fight for equality, but I have found that they are just as important to instill confidence in women.”
